History of Pole Buildings

Pole buildings, in some shape or form, have been around for centuries, dating back to the early 1700’s. These structures were originally used by farmers to store farm equipment, hay, and other supplies. They were constructed with wooden poles that were sunk into the ground and then connected by beams and rafters. The walls were then filled with straw, mud, or stones. The roofs were made of wood and often thatched with straw.

Invention of the Pole Building

The first pole buildings were developed in the 1930’s. They were a cheaper and faster alternative to traditional timber frame construction. The original designs called for the use of round poles that were set into the ground, usually to a depth of at least three feet. The poles were then connected to one another with metal trusses, and the entire structure was covered with roofing material.
